This is not a good story. I mean, yes it IS a good story but not a feel good story at all. I've pity on your fate. And I don't just mean the Air Asia fuss (btw: my wife and I slept one afternoon at an airport hotel during a short stop over. We thought it was a huge, great, modern airport, but kind of too monumental and a too cold atmosphere. Quite unlike Soekarno-Hatta for instance).

Though I don't know the details of and I'm not sure about the real reasons for your visit to KL ( though probably I can guess), and admitting being stubborn on principle is very laudable in my book, this time I very much doubt whether confronting "too many disappointments" was a sensible idea. You are too good to be disappointed by whoever it is.

By the time you read Air Asia will have managed to get you back home. I hope your tears have dried and you've closed that book for ever. And most of all that life in Padang and surroundings is gradually getting back to more or less normal.

As an addendum, I was invited to Delvi's village in the end -- but unfortunately I was back in Jakarta by then. Fingers crossed I can check it out next time! : )

A very clever post. It caused me to have mixed feelings.

My foremost thought is: how admiringly courageous is the perseverance of the Padang people. It is sheer vitality and a great talent for improvisation which is carrying them through. Essentially on their own they cope with the fall out of the earthquakes and to a large part they manage to succeed.

This exemplary behavior is at odds however with the saddening opinion of those ( only a few I hope) who think disasters like this are punishments by God. The solutions will not come from above or from elsewhere. You are right; it is much more likely a strong government ( "strong" means legitimate, transparent and with a broad social basis to secure sufficient income/tax and provide adequate public services), a strong administration, indeed is what is needed.

Being a “secular, westernernized, atheist……” like me, who has lived pretty much safe and protected ever since WWII (the big flooding of '53 didn't affect me or my family, either), the Padang-situation provoked a weird sense of guilt. It's the seemingly inevitability of inequality which is so uncomfortable: "Padang" made me realize once more that some have to live through series of devastating calamities , while others ( me) always seem to have all the luck of the world.

A small donation in money didn't silence my conscience.

Different circumstances, different background, different gender. So,am I in any way qualified to really understand in any significant way this problem? No, probably not. It is not just another conflict of generations I do know about.

So I can only try and use empathy. And sympathize with you. Or, perhaps, I can verbally encourage the flame of peaceful feminist rebellion. That is 'women's lib' Indonesian style.

In any case I can't think of reasonable reasons to rein in the freedom of girls/women in comparison to what boys/men are allowed to do. Quite the opposite. The amount of testosterone in males- which causes aggressiveness- objectively requires stricter social control of men.

So.

Well, I'm sure you guys have some fun together now anyhow. And I am certain you will enjoy touring Sumatra and Java later.

PS: I think I noticed some glimpses of Kampung morals when I attended to the ( wedding) ceremonies of my daughters in law and sons. One was actually in a Sumatra Kampung - but the syndrome wasn't absent in the other one in Bandar Lampung either.

@farina: yeah that's why every time i enter my class i always throw controversial or taboo issues to them so they can discuss openly. i never force them to believe in what m saying but i'll expose them to so many different but related discourses that hopefully they can draw some good conlusion.
and yeah unwanted pregnancy is really not a nice thing to undergo. I'll make sure none of my loved ones experience this predicament.
